N2 - Making full use of the phase diagram studies in the literature, enables us to distinguish the growth conditions in the Czochralski method necessary to grow both icosahedral (I-) and cubic approximant (R-) single crystals in an Al-Li-Cu alloy system. Both I- and R-type single crystals were grown to 1-5 mm in diameter and over 60 mm in length. X-ray Laue diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, and inductively coupled plasma-emission mass spectrometer analysis confirmed the formation of a single quasicrystal Al56Li33Cu11 and a single approximant crystal Al56.4Li32Cu11.6.
