Growth of icosahedral single quasicrystal and 1/1-cubic approximant single crystal in an Al-Li-Cu alloy system by the Czochralski method

Abstract

Making full use of the phase diagram studies in the literature, enables us to distinguish the growth conditions in the Czochralski method necessary to grow both icosahedral (I-) and cubic approximant (R-) single crystals in an Al-Li-Cu alloy system. Both I- and R-type single crystals were grown to 1-5 mm in diameter and over 60 mm in length. X-ray Laue diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, and inductively coupled plasma-emission mass spectrometer analysis confirmed the formation of a single quasicrystal Al56Li33Cu11 and a single approximant crystal Al56.4Li32Cu11.6.
