Abstract
Two major single crystal fiber growth methods were applied on Yb:YAG to show the feasibility of flexible single crystal laser fibers. A deep analysis on the assignment of Yb3+ energy levels followed by a detailed discussion was presented. A combinatorial chemistry approach was applied on concentration gradient crystal fibers which were grown by the laser heated pedestal growth (LHPG) method. A concentration gradient method allowed the measurement of the Yb3+ intrinsic radiative lifetime of 0.950±0.001 ms.
