Giant volume magnetostriction due to the itinerant electron metamagnetic transition in La(Fe-Si)13 compounds

Abstract

A study is carried out to examine the effect of the substitution by other magnetic elements on the Curie temperature and the volume change caused by the itinerant electron metamagnetic (IEM) transition. The sample used in this study is the La(Fe0.88Si0.12)13 compound. By Co substitution, the Curie temperature increases with conserving the IEM transition and a large volume change in the magnetic fields is realized at higher temperatures close to room temperature.
