Abstract
By using a high power erbium-ytterbium-doped fibre amplifier to amplify with pulses from a modelocked fibre laser compressed in a dispersion decreasing erbium-doped fibre amplifier (DD-EDFA), we have generated a 0.5W average power train of 280fs pulses at 1558nm. The bandwidth is 10.6nm, and the time-bandwidth product is 0.37. The maximum pulse energy of 53 pJ corresponds to 166W of peak power. Spectral shaping effects in the amplifier can be used to improve the quality of pulses compressed in the DD-EDFA.
