Gas permeability of oblique-layered carbon-cloth ablator

The gas permeability of carbon-cloth ablator developed in the Institute of Space and Astronautical Science (ISAS) was analyzed experimentally. The measured permeability varied for more than three orders of magnitude as the char volume varied from 0.3 to 1.0. The dependence of gas permeability on ply angle of the carbon cloth was also examined. It was found that the permeability for the case of 90-deg ply angle is about three times larger than that for the case of 0-deg ply angle.
