Abstract

An experiment was performed on free convective and radiative heat transfer from highly populated pin fin arrays. Data analyses were made in consideration of the temperature distribution in pin-fins, radiative heat transfer, and base plate convection. The free convection heat transfer characteristics of the pin fin arrays were well expressed by rendering the Nusselt number and Rayleigh number in terms of the horizontal pin pitch as a characteristic length, and the generalized characteristics were similar to those of rectangular fin arrays. An experimental formula of the pin fin array performances was presented.
