Fracture toughness improvement of TiC by Nb and Mo precipitates

Abstract

TiC toughened with Nb and Mo were investigated with regards to their fracture toughness, focusing on microstructural change. Microstructure was observed in a scanning electron microscope (SEM) and a transmission electron microscope (TEM). Phase identification and chemical analysis were performed by a X-ray diffractometer and an electron probe microanalyzer. Fracture toughness of the annealed TiC composites was found to be higher than that of the monolithic TiC and the as-cast ones, which increases with increasing Nb content.
