Formation of Tc(IV) Colloids and Coagulation Processes

Abstract

Coagulation processes of Tc(IV) colloids in aqueous solution formed by the reduction of pertechnetate (TcO4-) with stannous ions (Sn2+) were investigated. The Tc(IV) colloids formed at the concentration near the solubility of TcO2 · nH2O were found stable toward coagulation and dispersed in the solution at least for 2 months. When the concentration of technetium was as high as 6 × 10-5 mol · L-1, the particle size of the colloids gradually increased in several days depending on the ionic strength. The observed growth rate of colloid particles was successfully analyzed by a newly developed collision model, in which both the distribution of the kinetic energy of particles and the potential barrier between the two particles played significant roles.
