The formation of meatastable (TM)5SM and (TM) = Fe-Co) compounds and their magnetic properties have been investigated for rapidly quenched (Fe1-xCox)7Sm2 (0 ≤ x ≤ 1.0) alloy ribbons prepared by changing the disk surface velocity VR from 8.4 to 41.9 m/s. The ribbons prepared at VR = 41.9 m/s exhibit amorphous structure in the range 0 ≤ x ≤ 0.2 for (Fe1-xCox)5Sm alloys and 0 ≤ x ≤ 0.6 for (Fe1-xCox)7Sm2 alloys. The metastable (TM)5Sm compound is formed with a single phase in the range 0.6 ≤ x ≤ 1.0 by quenching (Fe1-xCox)5Sm alloys. While, the metastable (TM)7Sm2 compound is formed in the mixed state with a large amount (TM)3Sm stable compound by quenching (Fe1-xCox)7Sm2 (0.7 ≤ x ≤ 1.0) alloys. The single phase (TM)5Sm compound exhibits a huge coersivity of 5 to 10 kOe.
