FIRE REFINING OF CRUDE COPPER BY ALKALINE CARBONATE FLUXES.

Abstract

Thermodynamic and kinetic studies on the removal of Group Va elements (As,Sb,Bi) from copper were carried out in order to develop fire refining by alkaline carbonate fluxes such as Li//2CO//3, Na//2CO//3 and K//2CO//3. Na//2CO//3 and K//2CO//3 fluxes were stable with molten copper during Po//2 equals 10** minus **8-10** minus **5 atm at 1473 K and copper loss in the fluxes was small. On the other hand, Cu//2O-Li//2O slag appeared at the same conditions due to decomposition of Li//2CO//3 to Li//2O when Li//2CO//3 was added to the molten copper. The distribution coefficients of As, Sb and Bi between alkaline carbonate fluxes and molten copper were obtained under different oxygen potentials. The removal rates were also measured in the temperature range 1423 K-1523 K. The removal rates of As and Sb were higher than that of Bi.
