Fire analysis in Korea using NOAA AVHRR images

Abstract

In Korea, burn agriculture has been performed from 1,000 years or more before. However, burn agriculture is not accepted now. But the actual condition exists in both countries in Korea. Therefore, these are no statistical data for burn agriculture. If a burn agricultural fire is detecttable by the satellite image, it is very useful to investigation of the actual condition. In Tohoku University, NOAA AVHRR images are accumulated over the past fourteen years or more. It can study for the difference between present and the past in fire detection over a long term. We analyze fire in Korea using NOAA-11, 14 and 16 from 1989 to 2002. We compared to forest fire in Siberia to find characteristic of fire in Korea. In Korea, break out time of fire focus on Spring. The recovery situation of vegetation is very short term as compared to forest fire in Siberia. From these, We thought that the possibility of fire by burn agriculture is high.
