Fiber diameter variation-sample preparation and analysis

Abstract

The fiber diameter variation from fiber-to-fiber within a tow and along single filament lengths was examined by image analysis and scanning electron microscopy. Four SiC-based fibers - Hi-Nicalon; Hi-Nicalon type S; Tyranno SA; and Dow Sylramic, were studied. A modified three-parameter Weibull analysis was used to examine the fiber strengths and strength distribution. The polymer-derived SiC-based fibers exhibited large variation in diameter fiber-to-fiber across a tow and along filaments within a tow.
