Fermentation liquid of food waste as carbon source for denitrification

Abstract

Fermentation liquid of food waste consisted of large amount of readily (VFA, lactate) and slowly (carbohydrate, protein) biodegradable organic substances. In this study, the feasibility of using fermentation liquid of food waste as external carbon to improve nitrogen removal was investigated. Firstly, SBR was used to treat low C/N ratio wastewater with the addition of fermentation liquid as external carbon. After 40 days' acclimatization, nitrogen removal rate reached 85% and COD concentration in the effluent was below 40 mg/L, which demonstrated that adding fermentation liquid of food waste obviously enhanced nitrogen removal efficiency. Then, the characteristics of denitrification were studied by batch experiments. It was found that nitrite accumulation occurred when C/N ratio was lower than 5.1, while it disappeared as C/N ratio increased to 6.5. At this optimum C/N ratio of 6.5, denitrification rate was 3.77 mg NO3--N/(g VSS·h).
