Abstract

By pump and probe experiments we investigated self-trapping processes of holes and excitons in KI and RbI crystals. It is found that a free hole is relaxed initially into a one-center self-trapped hole (small polaron) and subsequently a two-center self-trapped hole (Vk center) is formed. The self-trapping of electron-hole pairs involves a one-center self-trapped hole correlated with an electron as a precursor state for a self-trapped exciton.
