Abstract
The transmission characteristics of femtosecond optical solitons in an 18−2 km erbium-doped fibre amplifier have been investigated under various pumping conditions. It is found that the transmission characteristics with forward pumping are different from those with backward pumping. Backward pumping is more promising and has been used to realise a lossless transmission of 440 fs soliton pulses at 1·551 pm with a pump power as low as 16 mW.
