Fault diagnosis method of power transformer winding axial displacement

Combining the finite element method (FEM) and the frequency response analysis (FRA),we proposed a fault diagnosis method focusing on the winding axial displacement, which is one of the common transformer faults. A finite element model with precise dimensions and material properties is built in Ansoft Maxwell. The main electrical parameters of the transformer, such as the grounding capacitances and the inter-disk capacitances, are calculated. And different fault degrees are taken into consideration in the simulation analysis. In order to explore the effect of transformer winding axial displacement on the change of FRA curves,we built an equivalent circuit using the electrical parameters calculated in the FEM model. We simulated the change of the transformer FRA curve with different degrees of axial displacement. The results shows that the FRA curve starts a slight variation at approximately 150 kHz under the typical impact of the axial displacement. The resonant peaks are shifted to higher frequency at the selected frequency band (200~250 kHz and 350~450 kHz). The simulation results and the field test results are compared, and they show a better consistency. Therefore, the proposed diagnosis method can guide the transformer winding fault diagnosis, and directly find the relationship between the types and degrees of the faults with the test results.
