A channel coding is described for a robust 4.8-kb/s data transmission in a digital mobile radio using a 16-kb/s radio channel. It is a combination of time diversity and forward error correction. Laboratory simulation and field experimental results using a 1.5-GHz carrier frequency for an application to facsimile signal transmission are presented. An A4-size modified-Huffman (MH)-encoded picture can be transmitted with sufficient quality in about 1 minute using a mobile radio cell designed for voice transmission.
