Fabrication of dense high Nb containing TiAl alloy by spark plasma sintering

Abstract

High Nb containing TiAl alloys from prealloyed powder of Ti-45Al-8.5Nb-0.2B-0.2W-0.1Y were prepared by SPS. The results showed that high Nb containing TiAl based-alloy with higher density and uniform microstructure could be obtained by SPS at sintering temperature of 1000°C or above. However, the microstructure was connected with the sintering temperature. Specimens with four typical microstructure including NG, DP, NL, FL could be obtained by changing sintering temperature. In addition, the mechanical properties changed with the microstructure. The specimens sintered at 1100°C with fine duplex microstructure were found to have good room temperature properties with the tensile strength of 1024 MPa and the elongation of 1.16%.
