Fabrication of Bioactive Glass-Ceramics Containing Zinc Oxide

Abstract

Apatite formation on glass-ceramics is an essential condition to bring about direct bonding to living bone when implanted into bony defects. Controlled surface reaction of the glass-ceramic is an important factor to govern bioactivity and biodegradation of the implanted materials. In this study, the effect of zinc oxide on bioactivity was investigated for glass-ceramics in the system ZnO-CaO-SiO2-P2O5-CaF2. Glass-ceramics containing apatite and wollastonite were prepared by the heat treatment of glass with compositions xZnO·(57.0-x)CaO·35.4SiO 2·7.2P2O5·0.4CaF2 (x=0.0,0.7, 3.6,7.1 or 14.2) (mol%). Apatite formation was observed on the glass-ceramics containing 0.7 mol% or less after soaking in a simulated body fluid (SBF) within 7 days, whereas it was not on the specimens containing 3.6 mol% or more. The addition of zinc oxide suppresses the dissolution of the glass phase, and makes it difficult to form the surface preferable to apatite formation. The reduced degradation can be achieved on the glass-ceramics when zinc oxide is added to bioactive compositions.
