Reactivity and sinterability of powders prepared by direct evaporation of the solvent from mixed sulfate solutions of Al and Ti were investigated. Calcination of solvent-vaporized powder at 800 degree C gave a reactive powder composed of gamma -Al//2O//3 and anatase. Rapid heating above 1280 degree C caused enhanced synthesis of Al//2TiO//5. Sintering behavior was characterized by rapid densification in the initial stage of the sintering, followed by a decrease in density due to microcracking. Sintering at 1400 degree C with the addition of MgO or SiO//2 produced a highly densified body low bulk thermal expansion.
