Fabrication and high performance characteristics of metallic glassy alloy tubes

Abstract

Bulk metallic glasses (BMGs) have high potential for both structural and functional applications owing to their good mechanical properties. With the aim of demonstrating the great engineering value of BMGs, we have developed a direct melt-forming technique in which glassy alloy tubes can be produced by suction casting. A Ti-based glassy alloy tube with an outer diameter of 2 mm was produced by this method. The glassy alloy tube exhibits good mechanical properties, i.e., high strength of 2120 MPa and low Young's modulus of 82 GPa.
