Experimental study of plasmoid formation by use of external magnetic field index

Abstract

We demonstareted for the first time formation of plasmoid: O-point with closed flux inside the low-S (Lundquist number) current sheet by applying hollow equilibrium magnetic field. The plasmoid was found to stay around the minimum equilibrium field area with minimum J x B force of the equilibrium field. All direct measurements of plasma poitential, electron density and electron temperature have their peaks inside the plasmoid.
