Abstract
An exciton is predicted to unbind abruptly in a fermion gas which exceeds a critical density. The transition should be observable in terms of a sudden red shift of a few meV in the photoluminescence of high-mobility n-type modulation-doped GaAs/AlxGa1-xAs quantum wells at electron densities of about 1011cm-2. Slightly above the critical density, the application of a magnetic field causes a reentrant exciton binding/unbinding phenomenon.
