Excitation mechanism of very slow oscillations of the jovian atmosphere

Abstract

We propose an excitation mechanism for the recently discovered very slow wavelike structure in the Jovian atmosphere. We regard it as normal mode gravity-wave oscillations of the Jovian atmosphere. Such oscillations are excited through resonance couplings with prograde inertial oscillations of the convective interior having negative energies. The amplitude of a low-frequency oscillation of the Jovian atmosphere can be large only in the equatorial region.
