Exchange-coupled magnetostrictive behavior in Tb-Fe/Fe multilayer films

Abstract

The spin-flop behavior of the magnetization and the magnetostrictive change associated with spin-flop transition were observed in Tb-Fe/Fe multilayers. An optical cantilever method was utilized to measure magnetostriction and the structural characterization was made by X-ray diffractometry. It was found that the easy axis of the Tb-Fe thin film changed into in-plane from the perpendicular direction by multilayering with Fe and by utilizing the exchange coupling at interfaces large magnetostriction value could be obtained around the Laves phase composition.
