Abstract

Tolerance to uncertainties in hyperparameter estimation can be increased by selective freezing. The multistage technique for error-correcting codes and image restoration uses the information acquired from the former stage to improve the performance of the latter stage. The cavity method provides a means of deriving the models representing the order parameters of the two-stage thermodynamics, and numerical results demonstrate the robustness of selective freezing against hyperparameter estimation uncertainties.
