N2 - The caption of figure 3 and a sentence on page 6 contain typographical errors. These errors do not affect any of the figures and results presented in the original paper. The fourth and fifth sentences in the caption of figure 3 on page 6 should read: ‘When λ2 < 0, positionc at which the value of Q reaches a local maximum is calculated in the plane normal to e1. When c is within the half grid distance from X, the eigenvector x with the largest eigenvalue of the Hessian of Q at c is calculated. The obtained point, c, and vector, x, are considered to be the position and direction of the vortex axis.’ The next sentence of equation (7) on page 6 should read: ‘When the obtained point, c, is within a half grid distance from the grid point, ∣c - Xe∣ > 0.5D, the eigenvector x with the largest eigenvalue of the Hessian of Q at c is calculated.
