Abstract
Erbium-doped fiber amplifiers (EDFAs) by laser diodes pumping play a great important role in long-distance optical soliton communication because of their polarization-insensitive high gain, high output power, and low noise figure. In this paper, we describe the principle of optical amplification by erbium ions, the structure and gain characteristics of an EDFA, and the performance of an EDFA for a dynamic soliton transmission system.
