Abstract

In order to control elbow movements by function neuromuscular stimulation (FNS), the activities of the elbow flexors and extensors during flexion and extension of the elbow were analyzed by averaging EMGs (electromyograms) in normal subjects. On the basis of this analysis, several standard neuromuscular stimulation patterns to control elbow movements were programmed and stored in a computer-controlled FNS system. Stimulation of the elbow flexors and extensors using this FNS system resulted in very smooth and reproducible elbow movements in normal subjects as well as a C4 quadriplegic patient.
