The nonlinear behavior of electrostatic shocks excited by velocity-modulated ion beam in magnetized plasma column was investigated for Q-machine experiment by computer simulation. The perturbations grew spatially in the beam velocity modulation with saturation due to an ion bunching of the beam. An electrostatic shock was formed with an increase in modulation ratio which was accompanied with steepening of the propagating front. The results show that velocity modulation was effective for excitation of electrostatic shocks in the Q-machine plasma with finite Landau damping.
