Electronic band structure in the ferrimagnetic state of Mn2Sb

Abstract

The electronic band structure for the ferrimagnetic state of Mn 2Sb has been calculated using the augmented plane-wave method. The energy splitting between the spin-up and spin-down bands cannot be described by a rigid splitting of the nonmagnetic band. It has been found that the width of 3d band of Mn(II) atoms is narrower than that of Mn(I) atoms and the hybridization between the 3d states of Mn(I) and Mn(II) is relatively weak compared with that in the nonmagnetic state. The calculated magnetic moments are in good agreement with the observed values. The density of states for the ferrimagnetic state of Mn2Sb as well as that for the ferromagnetic state of MnAlGe are compared with recent photoemission measurements.
