Electron-energy-loss spectroscopy study of C76

Abstract

Transmission electron-energy-loss spectra of crystalline C76 were measured and compared with those of C60, C70, and C84. The spectra due to π→π* interband transitions of C76 were much broader than those of C60 because of the reduced degeneracy of the π electron-energy states owing to the lower molecular symmetry of C76. The band-gap energy of C76 was revealed to be 1.3 eV, which can be directly compared with that obtained by theoretical calculations for the C76 isomer with D2 symmetry.
