Effects on high-temperature-elastic properties on α-/β-quartz phase transition of fused quartz

Abstract

The effects of temperature on the elastic and damping properties of fused quartz during repeated heating were studied. Increasing and decreasing rates in the internal friction at high temperature were calculated from the amplitude of the ultrasonic wave echo at room temperature. The β-/α-quartz phase transition may be a martensitic-like diffusionless transition, and the β-quartz/β2-tridymite phase transition seems to be a diffusion-like transition. The ultrasonic transverse wave is proven to be sensitive indicator of the evaluation of the atomic arrangement in the amorphous phase.
