Iodine intercalation of Bi2Sr2-xLaxCuOz (0.4 ≤ x ≤ 1.0) was studied. Transition from orthorhombic pristine phase to tetragonal intercalated phase was observed due to iodine intercalation. The expansion of the c-axis of the stage-1 intercalation compound increases slightly with increasing La content x. The Tc of iodine-intercalated specimens with 0.4 ≤ x ≤ 0.6 decreases from that of the pristine, but in the range of 0.7 ≤ x ≤ 0.9, the Tc of the intercalated specimen increases with respect to that of the pristine phase. Especially, the non-superconducting specimen with x = 0.9 became superconducting due to intercalation. This result demonstrates hole doping by iodine intercalation, i.e. the Cu valence of the pristine compound is increased.
