N2 - We have investigated, experimentally, the effect of additive elements (X=Fe, Ni, Zn, Ru, Pd, Ag and Si) in Cu layers of Co/Cu multilayers on the giant magnetoresistance (MR) and its oscillation period (Λ) with respect to the Cu layer thickness. The change in MR is small for X=Fe, Ni, Zn, Pd and Ag, while a rapid decrease in MR is seen for X=Ru. These results are discussed in terms of spin-dependent scattering of electrons at interfaces. It has been found that Λ is enhanced by the addition of X=Fe, Ni and Pd.
