Abstract
An analysis method for real fracture energy of ceramics, composites and epoxy resins by instrumented Charpy impact tests on unnotched specimens is presented. The dynamic fracture toughness value (K//d) is evaluated. The values are in good agreement with those evaluated from the fracture load by stress wave analysis. Reliability is ascertained by Weibull plot analysis. The effect of notch root radius on dynamic fracture toughness is examined. A linear relationship is obtained between the critical elastic strain energy release rate and notch root radius. The fracture toughness value obtained is in good agreement with that obtained from a fatigue cracked specimen.
