Drastic evolution of 4f-electron states in the metal-insulator transition of PrRu4P12

We performed inelastic neutron scattering experiment to investigate a role of 4f electrons in the M-I transition of PrRu4P12 at TM-I=63K. Below about 20 K, there are resolution-limited sharp excitations represented by two kinds of crystal-field schemes of Pr ions due to the low-temperature superlattice formation. With increasing temperature, the excitation peaks shift and broaden considerably. Such drastic evolution of the crystal-field excitations in PrRu4P12 indicates strong hybridization between 4f and conduction electrons.
