Direct observation of icosahedral cluster in Zr70Pd30 binary glassy alloy

A study of icosahedral cluster in Zr70Pd30 binary glassy alloy was performed. High resolution electron microscope technique was used for the analysis and the nanoicosahedral phase was found to precipitate as the primary phase. The amorphous structure remained even after annealing which was used to grow the ordered region to the diameter of 3-4 nm at 690 K. The icosahedral structure was indicated by the depiction of fivefold symmetry from the medium-range order using nanobeam electron diffraction pattern.
