N2 - The initial solidified layer formed at the first contact of liquid metal and chill has been found to deform. This deformation process was dynamically recorded by a motion analyzer (electronic camera). The deformation of the initial solidified layer occurs very soon after the liquid metal contacts the chill, and the most part of this deformation finishes in a very short time, 0.03 s in the case of Bi. The formation mechanism of surface ripples of castings was discussed on the basis of the findings.
