Development of technologies for recycling incinerater fly ash and slag

Abstract

A new technology has developed for a treatment of incinerator fly ash. It makes a possible to eliminate Pb and Cd from fly ash and the residue will be used as construction materials. This process also can treat a slag containing Pb and other non-ferrous metals simultaneously. Dioxins in the fly ash are also eliminated after the treatment and dioxin content in flue gas can be low under a new special regulation for dioxins emission in Japan. In this process, a rotary kiln is applied as a main reactor in which harmful heavy metals are evaporated by chlorination and pellets are well sintered. Experiments were performed on fly ash of various compositions using a pilot scale equipment that had a treatment capacity of 100 kg/hour. The sintered products are recovered as materials that can be easily used effectively in various applications. In addition, secondary fly ash can be resources of Pb and Zn.
