Abstract

As a part of research and development work of Development of Hydride Neutron Absorber for Fast Reactor, twelve capsule samples which contain hafnium hydride pellets in the stainless steel claddings were fabricated in Japan and transported to Research Institute of Atomic Reactors (RIAR) in Russia to do irradiation experiment in fast experimental reactor BOR-60 .The capsules were irradiated with varied conditions of the hafnium to metal ratio 1.3 and 1.5, of the cladding temperature 500 and 600? and of pellet to cladding gap bonding with helium and sodium. The irradiation was continued at the aimed temperature and until the cladding dose rate of around 15 displacements per atom (dpa). The post irradiation experiment clarified that the integrity of the capsules can be maintained through the irradiation. And it is also assured that the thermal design of the capsule is important to control the pellet behavior under irradiation because it is probable that the slight pellet swelling (<1%) occurs in irradiation.
