Development of a Compact Quenching Furnace for Use in High Magnetic Fields

Abstract

A compact quenching furnace used under high magnetic fields was developed. The range of the annealing temperature and magnetic field of this apparatus was T ≤ 643 K and μ0H ≤ 15 T. The cooling rate was about 40 K/s in magnetic field of μ0H = 15 T. As a performance test of the furnace, an in-field heat treatment at 643 K and in-field quenching were carried out for a Mn-Bi ferromagnet. The magnetic field effect on the phase equilibrium between MnBi and Mn1.08Bi was examined.
