Abstract

Two aspects of elastic recoil detection analysis technique are treated: i) the factors which effectively limit the depth resolution, and ii) the determination of recoil cross section for H(**4He, **4He)H and D(**4He,**4He)D reactions. Both experimental and theoretical estimate of depth resolution are presented and are shown to be in good agreement, suggesting that theoretical estimate may provide a reliable guide to optimum resolution conditions. The measurements of the cross section vs. energy curves on both hydrogen and deuterium demonstrate that the experimental values are enhanced over the theoretical Rutherford values.
