Densification and mechanical properties of Si3N4/SiC nanocomposite using Si-nitrided Si3N4 powder

Abstract

Si3Ni4/SiC nanocomposites were fabricated at low sintering temperatures by pressureless sintering using Si-nitrided Si3N4 powder. Their density, flexural strength, fracture toughness and microstructure were evaluated. The nano-sized SiC addition into Si3Ni4 affects the strength of the composite fabricated from low-cost Si-nitrided Si3N4 powder. The amount of sintering additives also affects the strength of the composite through the densification in that a high amount of sintering additives is required to obtain full densification and high flexural strength. Although the density of the composite was decreased with the increase of SiC content, the strength tended to increase with the addition of SiC particles.
