Abstract

The characteristics of the Northern Iwate Prefecture Earthquake, September 3, 1998 are mainly as follows;i)slope failures around epicentral region and the structural damages due to the vertical dislocation of ground caused by the fault movement were main damage.ii)building structure itself was damaged very slight. However facilities equipped with the building were failed. iii)the strong motion records were observed around the epicentral region. The maximum acceleration is more than 700gal. The characteristics of the seismic records were influenced by the the fault mechanism as dip slip.
