Current trends in ceramic materials technology: Fine ceramics on the front lines of industrial development

Research output: Contribution to journalArticlepeer-review

Abstract

Ceramic products are now widely used in computers, portable telephones, automobiles, airplanes, domestic electrical appliances, and many other products. Moreover, Japan leads the world in the technical development of ceramics and in devising commercial and industrial uses for them. A discussion on recent trends in fine ceramics covers background of the development of fine ceramics; practical material types and characteristics of fine ceramics; fine ceramic materials worth studying, i.e., the struggle of silicon nitride and alumina as wear-resistant materials and zirconia in support of engine technology; porous body ceramics that solve environmental problems, e.g., ceramic filters for use in automobiles; and other noteworthy fine ceramics.
