The present study describes the appeared phases and hydrogen absorbing properties of the non-stoichiometric LaNi, and LaNix-1M (M=A1, Co, Mn, Si) melt-spun ribbons. A new metastable phase with TbCu7-type structure is observed in LaNi, (x>5) melt-spun ribbons. A high melt-spinning rate is able to form the single phase of the TbCu7 structure. It is found that the Mn or Si addition stabilizes the CaCu5 structure in wide compositional range of LaNix-1Mn (X=5∼6. 5), orLaNix-1Si (X=5∼8) melt-spun ribbons. But the amount of absorbed hydrogen decreases with increasing Ni content.
