Crystal growth and luminescence properties of Pr-doped LiYF4 and LiCaAlF6

Pr-doped LiYF4 (YLF) and LiCaAlF6 (LiCAF) single crystals were grown by the micro-pulling-down (μ-PD) method. The crystals were transparent, 2.0mm in diameter, and 40-50mm in length. Neither visible inclusions nor cracks were observed. Transmittance, reflectance, and X-ray-excited emission spectra of Pr-doped YLF and LiCAF were measured. For both crystals, approximately 80% transmittance and 3% reflectance were achieved at visible wavelengths. Emission peaks due to Pr3+ 5d-4f transitions at approximately 220-250, 270, 330, and 410nm were observed for both crystals.
