The compression strength behavior and deformation mechanism of Ir-based refractory superalloys was investigated. The microstructure and strength behavior of Ir-Nb and Ir-Zr alloys were also investigated, which demonstrated that the precipitation hardening of the Ir-Zr alloy is higher than that of the Ir-Nb alloy. In the Ir-Zr alloy, a semi-coherent structure with misfit dislocations at the interface also exists in addition to the coherent structure. The precipitate shape difference is attributed to the lattice misfit between the fcc matrix and the L12 precipitates. It is also shown that the deformation of the Ir-Zr alloy progresses as a result of precipitates shearing. The deformation mode of the Ir-Nb alloy is suggested as being a bypassing mechanism.
