Purpose : In the United States, the Functional Vision Score (FVS) has been reported to have a strong correlation with the 25-item National Eye Institute Visual Function Questionnaire (NEI VFQ-25) and to be a better predictor of quality of life of visually impaired people. This study aimed to confirm the relationship between FVS and NEI VFQ-25 of visually impaired people in Japan. Subjects and Methods : 176 visually impaired people aged 20 years or older who are visiting 4 university hospital and 1 ophthalmologic clinic participated in this study. We calculated FVS, Functional Acuity Score (FAS), and Functional Field Score (FFS) from the results of visual acuity and visual field examination and examined the correlation with NEI VFQ-25. Then we compared the results with previous studies, and compared the strength of correlation between FVS, FAS, FFS and NEI VFQ-25. Results : FVS showed a significant correlation with the overall score and 9 domains except for "general health and "ocular pain" of NEI VFQ-25. The domains with the stronger correlation were "distance vision and "overall score". FVS was strongly correlated with the largest number of domains of NEI VFQ-25,"peripheral vision" "color vision" "mental health" "social function" "role limitations" "dependency" "distance vision" and "overall score", compared to FAS and FFS. Conclusion : The association between FVS and NEI VFQ-25 in people with low vision in Japan showed the same trend as in previous studies. It is shown that FVS is a predictor of visual-function-related QOL.
